Patterns of Hatchery‐Produced Returns of American Shad in the James River, Virginia

چکیده
American Shad Alosa sapidissima is an anadromous clupeid that once supported a robust fishery but has declined drastically throughout its native range due to overfishing, dam proliferation, and poor water quality. A hatchery program on the James River in Virginia was introduced 1992 support recovery of stocks. Following moratorium enacted 1994, fisheries-independent survey initiated 1998 monitor population efforts status stocks Virginia. This paper examined 22 years monitoring data for determined effect inputs stock Shad. The spawning index increased from 2.57 peak 9.33 2003 generally been declining since at very low levels most recent years. prevalence female (i.e., percentage fish derived hatchery) ranged between 3.6% 60.5%. Years with higher values were significantly correlated percentages returning spawn. stock–recruitment relationship best explained by Ricker model, which had lowest residual standard error Akaike information criterion value. threshold level hatchery-released individuals (approximately 4 million larvae) necessary achieve highest numbers spawners, stocking above 7 larvae returns. Long-term allowed critical examination contribution yearly run relative success rate each year-class. From these data, we consider dependent upon inputs, ideal returns occurring during moderate stocking.

Feeding Behavior of American Shad during Spawning Migration in the York River, Virginia
—Throughout its native range, American shad Alosa sapidissima is thought to cease feeding during anadromous migration. We examined the feeding habits of American shad during spawning migration by documenting changes in diet composition and feeding that occur in mature fish in the York River, Virginia. American shad were collected prior to and after spawning at various locations on a gradient fr...
متن کاملCohort-Specific Growth and Mortality of Juvenile American Shad in the Pamunkey River, Virginia
—We estimated the variation in instantaneous rates of growth (G) and mortality (M) between intraannual cohorts of juvenile American shad Alosa sapidissima in the Pamunkey River, Virginia. The ages of juveniles captured by push net during the juvenile abundance index surveys in 1998 and 1999 were estimated by counting daily rings on the sagittal otoliths. Weight-at-age and abundance-at-age data ...
متن کاملContribution of Allochthonous Carbon to American Shad Production in the Mattaponi River, Virginia, Using Stable Isotopes
Our objective was to quantify the contribution of autochthonous, locally-produced phytoplankton, and allochthonous, terrestrial-derived organic matter (OM) to the production of young-of-year (YOY) American shad (Alosa sapidissima) using stable isotopes. We measured the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope composition of YOY American shad in the tidal fresh water of the Mattaponi River, a tributar...

the effect of taftan pozzolan on the compressive strength of concrete in the environmental conditions of oman sea (chabahar port)
cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...
